How First Nations & BC removed Broughton and Sechelt salmon farms. Action needed in Clayoquot Sound, Port Hardy

BC Salmon farms are expanding near Tofino!?

Read Clayoquot Action’s 3 letters to Minister Joyce Murray: the Open Letter with DFO internal Aquaculture documents; a letter you can modify and send; a Joint Letter to Minister Joyce Murray from 21 ENGOs.

OPEN LETTER to Fisheries Minister intro:
It is outrageous that DFO is granting permits to expand BC salmon farms in the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region, at the same time fish farms are being removed from other parts of the coast. These expansions have been shrouded in mystery, which is why we wrote an Open Letter to Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray.

“The Broughton Aquaculture Transition Initiative (BATI) was developed 2019-2020 on behalf of three First Nations to restore wild Salmon populations & ecosystems in the Broughton Area while BC salmon farms are removed.”

The Kwikwasut’lnuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation, the Mamalilikulla First Nation, and the ‘Namgis First Nation are the three nations.

It is part of an innovative multi-party initiative including the Federal and Provincial governments and the two BC salmon farm aquaculture companies that operate in the area based on agreements to decommission (BC salmon farms) aquaculture facilities.

BATI is administered by the ‘Namgis First Nation, and it is funded largely by three provincial-federal government partnership grants through the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF). (Agreements in 2018 for decommission of Broughton BC salmon farms through 2023)

Through the Broughton Aquaculture Transition Initiative (BATI) program, PSF is proud to work with several area First Nations as a partner, conducting regular monitoring in and around the active and de-commissioned open-pen net BC salmon farms. In this video, you’ll hear about the BATI priorities and the work PSF is conducting in the Broughton Archipelago to study the presence of infectious agents in and around open-net fish farms. By using environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, the team studies tiny DNA fragments shed by organisms in the water. This methodology is important for early detection of infectious agents. Through engagement with provincial and federal governments, the initiative aims to reduce the impacts of finfish aquaculture on Broughton area wild Pacific salmon as the farms transition by 2025.

Washington State will not renew leases for Puget Sound fish farms, 5 years after spill

The Seattle Times, Nov. 14, 2022 “Despite years of litigation — and a company that has fought us every step of the way — we are now able to deny lease renewals for the remaining net pen sites,” Franz said in a statement. “Today, we are returning our waters to wild fish and natural habitat. Today, we are freeing Puget Sound of enclosed cages.”

“The company’s last net pens in Puget Sound are located in Rich Passage near Bainbridge Island and Hope Island in Skagit Bay. Cooke has until Dec. 14 to wrap up steelhead farming and begin deconstructing their equipment, according to DNR officials.”

British Columbia remains the only jurisdiction on North America’s west coast to allow salmon farming.
