What more can I do to help save wild salmon?
Thank you for taking action to help save wild salmon. If you haven’t already done so, you can share this website with family and friends, encourage them to educate themselves about wild salmon and the fish farm issue, and support them in sending their own letter to the CPPIB.
Online letters and petitions
There are a number of organizations sponsoring online letters and petitions that you can sign to encourage governments to remove all floating, open-net fish farms from our coasts. See: Wild Salmon Action Team, Clayoquot Action, Safe Salmon, Living Oceans, and David Suzuki Foundation.
Write to Minister Diane Lebouthillier
Canada’s federal government, specifically the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, regulates floating open-net fish farms on our Pacific coast. The Hon. Diane Lebouthillier Murray is the responsible Minister for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard. If you want to write to her in support of the courageous action needed to remove fish farms from the B.C. coast, her email address is [email protected].
Encourage nature conservation groups to take action
If you are a member of a club or organization involved in nature conservation, you can encourage your friends and colleagues to become better informed about the plight of wild salmon and to take helpful action together.
How you consume salmon can also make a difference
At your grocery store or fish market, read the labels or ask the staff where the salmon comes from — Is it wild or ocean-farmed? Ask the same question when ordering salmon at a restaurant. Try to avoid ocean-farmed salmon. Land-based farmed salmon is OK. Or ask local businesses to offer only wild salmon as in Tofino, B.C. Or ask your favourite chef to serve only salmon that is wild or from land-based farms as these chefs did.
So you know, farmed Atlantic salmon don’t have access to wild food such as krill and shrimp so their flesh is grey or off-white. To colour it pink, farmers put an additive in their feed.
Donate to an organization working for wild salmon
Many organizations have active programs to support wild salmon that you can donate to. Several are listed on our Organizations page. Find one that you like and become a donor, either one-time or regularly. Monthly donations are especially appreciated since they allow an organization to plan ahead knowing they have your financial support.
